The largest Greek island, Crete boasts some extraordinary beaches. But given its size, the best way to experience its splendid seaside spoils is with a car — or even better, by boat. So from sweeping sandy beaches with sun beds and Greek salads to off-grid coves with the kind of water that has to be seen to be believed, here are some of the best beaches in Crete.
Along with Elafonissi, Balos is one of Crete’s best (and most famous) beaches. This spectacular lagoon in the rugged Gramvousa Peninsula is only accessible by a hairy dirt-road, or by boat (the latter a good option if you’re happy to spend a day here). Either way, expect powder-white sands and varying shades of blue that will make your jaw drop. And don’t forget to pack water and snacks as there’s no facilities.
The beach tourists flock far and wide to, you’ll likely have seen pictures of Elafonissi’s spectacular pale pink sand and translucent turquoise waters, forever one of Crete’s best. An idyllic lagoon like a little island, its shallow waters are perfect for wading children, while more adventurous swimmers can explore exotic coves on its fringe. Depending where you’re staying, it’s usually a long drive, so check the weather before you make the journey — and if it’s windy, steer clear.
A long, sweeping strip of golden sand and sparkling cerulean sea, this beach on the West coast of Crete is one of the island’s most popular. Given its large size, there’s numerous beaches here, along with bars, cafés and water activities. Either park yourself on a plush daybed at trendy Liokalyvo and have crisp rose and Tuna Tataki salad delivered to your cabana (you can even get a massage or shop at its boutique), or roll out your towel on a secluded patch of sand and go au naturale.
Near the town of Agios Nikolaos in Lassithi, Istro is a lovely, quiet bay dotted with sun loungers and umbrellas making it one of the best beaches in Crete. A sandy beach with bright turquoise waters, its sloping green hills and lush landscape provide an idyllic spot for both lounging and swimming, while a wide range of amenities mean you can park yourself all day and seemingly not lift a finger (except to reapply sunscreen, of course).
An incredibly unique beach in Crete’s southern underbelly, here the river and the sea converge to create a coastline unlike any other. With the ragged Kourtaliotiko Gorge as its backdrop, a tangle of tropical palm trees line the Megalopotamos River, which meets a long stretch of white sand that opens out to the magnificent Libyan Sea. The walk down (and back up) isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if you’re game — a jungle-like paradise uniquely of its place awaits.
The once-discreet Seitan Limania is now a tourist hotspot thanks to social media, but don’t let the Instagrammers deter you. A natural marvel, this narrow zig-zag shaped beach is as breathtaking from the top as it is from bottom — and well-worth the tussle in high season. With water as clear (and blue!) as a swimming pool, make the pilgrimage down the rocky path (about 10 minutes) and discover one of the most unforgettable and unique swimming spots in Crete (and the world).
As its name suggests, the water really is sweeter here: natural freshwater springs flow directly into the sea making it impossibly clear and turquoise in tone. A striking beauty, this beach is flanked by a vertiginous cliff, while down below blue and white sunbeds pierce its white pebbled shore and a single canteen serves cold water and simple snacks. For those averse to nudity, head to the western side, as the eastern half of the beach is clothing optional. Either hop on the water taxi from Sfakion, or for the intrepidly-minded, attempt the 30-min hike down. Either way, it’s paradise.
While western Crete steals all the glory, this beach in the eastern region of Lasithi is a gem. Famous for its unique Palm Forest — the largest in Europe which dates back to the Classical period — Vaï’s soft golden sand and blue waters gatekeep more than 250,000 square metres of towering palm trees. A popular tourist spot, this unusually tropical beach gets busy, so get there early or be prepared to hip-and-shoulder the crowds.
With a thatched taverna overlooking the spectacular Libyan Sea, Marmara is a classic expression of Greek island life. Below, a shimmering shingle beach with simple sun beds and shabby straw umbrellas. Above, Taverna Dialeskari: an alfresco terrace that dishes up roasted lamb or goat in the wood-fire oven, along with homemade bread, Greek salads and cold Cretan beer. And for something sweet and uniquely local, order the Sfakiani pie: crispy pita filled xynomizithra cheese and drizzled in warm honey.
