Feel a tremor? Here's what to do in Bali when there's an earthquake

One of the things that surprised me most when I was living in Bali was how frequently the earth shook under my feet. (Not counting mornings after Mexicola, of course). I still remember my first earthquake on the island in 2016. I had just moved into my villa and was woken to my bed shaking and the doors rattling. I didn’t get much sleep that night. The powerful 6.9 Lombok earthquake of August 2018 was a different story. The ground became jelly. While Chrissy Teigen famously live-tweeted her own experience upon swaying stilts from Como Shambhala in Ubud, our pool sloshed around like a stormy ocean. My housemate and I were so shaken that we jumped on our scooters and drove to higher ground. For a long time, the atmosphere was one of uncertainty and people were alert and on edge. While earthquakes are usually nothing to worry about in Bali, it’s good to be prepared. Here’s what to do if you’re in Bali and there’s a tremor.
