With a name that gives nothing away, Fisherman’s Bastion, or The Halászbástya, is a snap-happy traveller’s dream come true. The neo-gothic-style fortress sits high on Castle Hill in Budapest, just beside Matthias Church, overlooking the city below. Catch a near-vertical vintage train to the Disney-esque Bastion and wander through its incredible architecture.

A beautifully restored neo-gothic hall, the market is filled with fresh produce alongside signature Hungarian dishes that are near-impossible to resist during the colder season. Lángos (see above) is fried and topped with sour cream and cheese, goulash is served en masse, and chimney cakes sprinkled in sugar and cinnamon are devoured by hungry market-goers.

Offering visitors the best vantage point from which to take in Buda and Pest (the city’s two sides), 235-metre Gellert Hill sits proudly overlooking the Danube River, which separates the pair. Rug up to visit the top by night, and see the city lit up in all its romantic glory. While you’re there, explore its grand monuments honouring its namesake saint.
