Okinawa’s Main Island, and its large siblings – Kume, Kerama, Yaeyamo and Miyako – are home to sprawling, soft white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, coral reefs to rival Australia’s home-grown offerings, and lush green hills. From April to October, the time is ripe for ocean swims and snorkeling – and some of the most highly visited beaches are Busena, Manza and Nirai Beaches.

An appeasingly mild climate all year long makes Okinawa an easy decision for sun-seeking travellers. And yet, those with an interest in wildlife will be even more excited to discover the incredibly diverse range of animals, insects, marine life that call these islands home. From dugongs to coconut crabs, and from atlas moths to the mysterious fish-or-frog mudskipper, there’s a whole world of wildlife watching to be done.

Of course, Okinawa is home to many Japanese cultural sites, including Shinto and Buddhist temples, tea houses and peaceful zen gardens, but due to the significant presence of US soldiers based in Okinawa during World War II, American culture lives on in this fascinating place that is unlike other Japanese prefectures. Although there’s no shortage of Japanese food, American cuisine prevails in many Okinawan eateries today – think burger joints, chicken and waffle cafes, pancake houses and taco-serving restaurants. It’s Japan’s own Hawaii.

Okinawans are known around the world for their typically long and healthy lives. The phrase ‘nuchi gusui’ means ‘the medicine of life’ and refers to the all-encompassing ‘nourishing’ experiences that the Okinawans believe to have beneficial longevity effects – from time spent with loved ones, to witnessing human kindness, viewing beautiful scenery and devouring delicious meals. The latter of which are easy to find in this part of the world. These food-oriented folk attribute their well-balanced diets to their long, healthy lives. The good news? The traditional Okinawan diet features a lot of potato.
