The original Icehotel, located in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, has just opened its winter art exhibit for 2021 and we’re ready to get our Elsa on.
Live out your Frozen fantasy inside Sweden's new ice hotel suites
The cold never bothered me anyway.
Lucid Dream
Icehotel opened in 1989 and comprises year-round accommodation, Icehotel 365, and a winter art exhibition. The exhibition is made entirely out of natural ice from Torne River, and is built and melts every year, earning it the title of World’s Leading Themed Hotel in the 2018 World Travel Awards.
A Journey into Letter space
This year’s winter exhibition includes 18 art suites of varying themes and was created by 35 artists chosen from over 200 around the world. Each suite is totally unique and carved by hand from 563 tonnes of ice, making every year at Icehotel a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Kodex Maximus
The rooms hold a temperature between -5 and -8 degrees Celsius, but you won’t need to sleep in your ski coat. The beds have an extra thick mattress that rests on a wooden base and are covered with reindeer hides.
Ice Ice Baby
You’ll also sleep in a thermal sleeping bag – below a handmade ice crystal chandelier – and will be treated to hot lingonberry juice, a sauna session and a hot shower in the morning.
Ceremony Hall
If you’re stuck in the southern hemisphere like us, and can’t quite make it up to Sweden, jump on Instagram and visit through Icehotel’s Augmented Reality Experience – a digital journey to Icehotel’s world of ice and snow – from your living room.
Nice Ice
Thankfully, when the winter hotel has melted back into the river in the spring, Icehotel 365 remains – a place where visitors can experience the ice and snow year-round, with 18 suites of ice and snow. And it’s the perfect virtual spot to belt out a heartfelt rendition of “Let It Go”.
Legacy
Icehotel Sweden is open now until April 11 2021. Visit the Art + Design gallery here.
