Sure, you can stay in many a luxury hotel in Alaska, but to really appreciate this stunningly beautiful remote landscape, camping is your best bet. Girdwood is a picturesque area in which to camp, and it’s only 61km out of Anchorage so it’s easy to access too. Girdwood Campground plays host to 18 camping spots set amongst the spruce and cottonwood trees. There are cooking and bathroom facilities – even a fire ring – and the camp is within walking distance to restaurants. The slopes are just nearby at Alyeska Resort, but you might not want to camp in those temperatures. Don’t worry – there are plenty of hotels to accommodate the ski season.
