La Boqueria Food Market in central Barcelona is a bustling hub where locals buy fresh produce, seafood and jamón, and those visiting the city sample the region’s finest fare. The scent of paella rises over the crowds as vendors spruke their wares and market-goers take a stool at one of the bars, for satisfying snacks and a quenching beverage. For the best and freshest food, get in early.

Few cities manage to lay claim to their own pristine beaches (don’t worry Brisbane, we haven’t forgotten you), but Barcelona is home to one of the best-kept city beaches in the world: Playa de la Barceloneta. Head to the markets, pick up some delicious snacks, and while away an afternoon under the Spanish sun.

The people of Barcelona, and its visitors, love to expel a little of their contagious energy through the medium of dance. Often, Spanish bands (or, at the very least, someone with a boombox) will set up in the city’s squares. Before long, locals and tourists alike are attempting their best flamenco. If traditional music isn’t your style, by night, many of the bars of Barcelona become live music venues – the kind where you can slink into a seat, sangria in hand, and watch on from a comfortable distance.
