Córdoba’s cathedral-mosque may be touristy, but it’s still worth visiting for its impressive multi-arched architecture and historic importance. Get there early (9:30am) if you want to climb the belltower – only 20 people every half hour are allowed up. The views from the top are worth the climb.

The world-renowned Andalusian horse originated here, and the Royal Stables were built in 1570 to honour them. Watch horsemanship in action at the incredible Passion and Spirit of the Andalusian Horse show, where music, flamenco dance, and equine antics combine in a spectacular performance. Adjoining the stables is the ancient fortress of Alcazar – well worth exploring.

Green thumbed or not, if you’re in town in May be sure to visit some of the flower-filled courtyards and patios open to the public during the Festival of Patios. Locals compete to create the most beautiful spaces, and delight in sharing them between May 1 and 13. It’s been a tradition in the city since 1918!

With 30 stalls dishing up Córdobese and Spanish delicacies (oxtail stew among them), along with cured meats, oysters, cheeses and wines, Victoria Market is foodie heaven. Beyond the market, the city’s many taverns and restaurants are open late. Try Puerta Savilla for traditional dishes and surrounds or Noor restaurant for a Michelin-star experience.

The 250-metre long Roman Bridge crosses the river in Córdoba’s historic centre, making for a pleasant evening stroll before or after dinner. With the help of some special effects, the bridge featured in Season 5 of Game of Thrones, becoming the Long Bridge of Volantis.
