An endearing term used to describe the iconic row of colourful Victorian houses (not actual women), the painted ladies run along Hayes and Steiner Streets, just across from Alamo Square Park. A San Fran icon and regular movie star (you may recognise them from featured roles in Full House, The Five-Year Engagement and Invasion of the Body Snatchers) the optimum time for photos is right on sunset when the park is bathed in a soft glow.

New city = new you. If you’re on the hunt for some legitimate vintage finds then go no further than Wallflower which stocks a well curated collection of clothes, accessories and home decor. And if you’re feeling thrifty and want to give back to the community, Missions Thrift Store is where to find a great deal – just be prepared to sift through the racks a little.

A great book should always accompany an excellent holiday! Walking through the Mission District of San Fran will take you past several bookstores, but none as well loved as Dog Eared Books. Complete with creaky wooden floors, there are rows upon rows of new and pre-loved books and magazines. There’s even a reading group that takes place every Sunday evening.

Of course, a walk across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge is a must, but viewing the old gal from a different angle will make the experience feel much more special. Walk fifteen minutes from Crissy Field towards Fort Point National Historic Site for a spectacular view looking up towards the bridge. Or dig your toes into the sand on Baker Beach (on the southwest side) and look back towards those giant red arches.

Grab a well-earned ice cream from Bi-Rite Creamery and walk through the alleyways of the Mission District. Make sure you look out for the murals painted across the walls. Considered works of art, they are created by the Clarion Alley Mural project and Precita Eye Muralists who use art to engage and activate the local community.
