We think it’s safe to say that Bali’s ever-evolving dining scene is not what it used to be. And, if it’s been a while between visits, it may just be time you returned on a culinary exploration of the balmy isle. Meet the all-new, Japanese-inspired Uni Bar and Restaurant that’s becoming a destination of its own in Berawa.
The enterprising duo behind much-loved restaurant Urchin are reshaping Bali’s dining scene, one venue at a time. The latest locale from chef Steven Skelly and drinks expert Nicolas Lento is Uni Restaurant and Bar, which opened in October.
Embracing elements of minimalistic Japanese design, the new 70-seater is a self-described ‘casual fine diner’ set in the heart of Berawa.
Chef Skeller says, “Locally sourced seafood and vegetables are served with Japanese and French influences in a modern style. No messing around with elaborate plating or crazy combinations. Uni is the place you can eat at multiple times a week, not just on special occasions.”
Uni will be open every day, serving dinner from 6.00pm to 10.30pm and kicking on until late for drinks. Two different menus will be available, with both an a la carte and a tasting option.
From Japanese sake to low-proof cocktails, and tea or wine-match dinners, there’ll be something for all tastes to drink. Lento explains “There will of course be minimum intervention wines. All of them will be available by the glass. The beverage pairings will be including cocktails, teas, natural wines, sake to match the tasting menu.”
The artwork featured throughout the venue is the result of a collaboration with French artist Yaz and his collection Fair Le Off.
Guests can enjoy the likes of savoury doughnuts accompanied by brandade and beetroot, a decadent crab lasagna served with soft herbs and a ginger emulsion and cha sui lobster bun. Locally sourced, fresh ingredients are the star of the flavoursome show at Uni.
Finding your favourite wines in Bali can be tricky, but, here, wines have been sourced from around the globe, including experimental drops from Lucy Margaux, to classics like Bollinger La Grande Année. Creatively concocted cocktails will also be available.
