Call on your inner minimalist (we know they’re in there) and pack only a few, smart outfits and comfortable, closed-in shoes. If you’re catching small planes across the country, or travelling in vehicles in which space is at a premium, it’s best to pack less. Think lightweight, quick-dry clothing that you can launder along the way if necessary. It can be a good idea to avoid heavily patterned clothing – and your tour company of choice can advice on specific clothing requirements.

The usual travel essentials become even more important when you’re away from a city base. Think basic medical kits and toiletries, tissues and wet wipes, suncream, portable chargers for your camera and phone, and those all-important travel documents. Find out in advance whether you’ll have access to the internet or phone service providers, and pack accordingly.

If you’re travelling to Africa, it’s important to remember that some African nations have now banned certain types of plastics, for environmental preservation. Culturally, it’s a good idea to dress conservatively (and sun-safely!) in many African countries, and avoid packing items like drones where they’re banned. It’s all about researching your destination. And, if in doubt, ask your tour company.

Think like a scout. Always be prepared. If room permits, it can be a great idea to bring a torch for evenings, or a headlight, hiking boots for rough terrain, warm wear for cold nights, a guide book for identifying the things you see, a notebook for recording your experiences, and a handy pair of binoculars (and zoom lenses for your camera) for getting up-close with the wildlife.
