Before leaving the city, book in for dinner at Luke Dale-Roberts uber-cool Pot Luck Club. The hip penthouse space has 360-degree views of the city and the food is a playful mash-up of all the influences that have shaped the Cape’s unique flavour – springbok tartare, peri peri prawns and a life changing Cape Malay chicken curry. From the cocktails to the wine list and share plates, ordered from a yum cha-style menu, the flavours are as big and brash as the view of Table Mountain through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Just 15 minutes’ drive from Cape Town city centre, the Constantia Wine Route is the closest you’ll get to shiraz in the city. The winding, mountain wine region may be famous for its picturesque wineries, but it’s the food offering that makes it a double threat. La Colombe on Silvermist Wine Estate is a refined fine-dining destination where the playful creativity of young chef James Gaag belies his mature, perfectionist approach. Dishes feature local produce in abundance, artful plating, petits fours are a delicious lesson in sensory training, and there’s even a secret course served in a mystery location on the property. South Africa’s oldest and most renowned wine region, Stellenbosch has plenty to tempt the hungry and thirsty traveller. Faber at Avondale Estate shares the winery’s ethos of organic and and biodynamic production, resulting in a sustainability-driven restaurant focused on supporting organic, free-range and low-carbon producers. Get back to nature in the most delicious way possible with a menu that spans smoked duck with radish flowers, butter roasted leek from the kitchen garden and set buffalo milk with brandy snap, all matched with estate wines. Franschhoek In the Devon Valley, just out of Stellenbosch, The House of J C Le Roux is dedicated entirely to French-style sparkling wine. Their chocolate and nougat sparkling wine pairing is the ultimate tasting for sweet tooths. Sip your way through the small-batch, sustainably produced wines made in the Banhoek valley at Bartinney Estate at their eponymous wine bar in Stellenbosch town. Try their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon by the glass or bottle, with wine-friendly snacks including cheese boards and posh sandwiches in the cosy, wood-panelled bar.

Franschhoek means French corner in Dutch and it’s here, tucked into the picturesque Cape Winelands of South Africa, that the Huguenots fled France bringing with them their knowledge of viticulture. Set up camp at the luxurious Leeu Estate boutique hotel, where local art is showcased throughout the stately property. Rooms are handsome and generous, with remote-controlled gas fires and views of the manicured gardens and surrounding vineyards, which will be covered in frost before the morning sun cracks over the mountain.

Also in Franschhoek is Babylonstoren, a perfectly restored Cape Dutch Farm that dates back to 1692 and is as close to paradise on earth as it gets. The gleaming white farmhouse is set among some of the best preserved farmyards in the Cape. Take a stroll through the sprawling 8-acres of orderly fruit and vegetable plots, complete with bee hives, chickens and even a mulberry grove, before lunch at their flagship restaurant Babel. Housed in a former cow shed, the white-washed interior has the understated luxury you’ll find elsewhere on the estate, in the guest rooms, in the homeware boutique, in the wine tasting room and in the spa. Produce is grown on-site, and the star of the menu are seasonal colour coded dishes, such as Red (star anise-infused beetroot and slow-roasted strawberries, with Babylonstoren fior di latte and blood orange) and Green (miso broth with early asparagus, broad beans, peas, wilted greens and a deep-fried Babylonstoren ricotta cluster dusted with kale).
