It’s been a long time coming.
It’s not that Sydneysiders are short on beaches. The city is spoilt for choice when it comes to sandy shores and stunning swim spots. But more than two years ago, locals lost one of their most beloved beaches in Sydney’s eastern suburbs to reconstruction. When Shark Beach closed for the seawall to be repaired in March 2022, locals were told it would only be for 18 months. Alas, the project was delayed for many unforeseen reasons – like wet weather delays, the discovery and removal of asbestos and construction issues.

But it looks like locals will finally be able to cool off at the local hotspot this summer, with construction predicted to be completed by the end of November according to National Parks & Wildlife Services. The website states that “construction to replace the concrete seawall at Nielsen Park is in progress and scheduled for completion by the end of November 2024 subject to weather and coastal conditions.” So here’s hoping that, all going well, those looking to cool off this summer will be able to do so at Shark Beach.
