Details of the $5 billion Air Force One replacement project revealed

Air Force One replacement project 2020

The world's most iconic aircraft is about to get a makeover.

Just like passenger airlines retire their aging aircraft, the planes that ferry the President of the United States and assorted White House staffers also get a makeover every now and then.

The next generation aircraft that POTUS is trading up for is the VC-25B, according to Defense One, and it comes with a cool $5.3 billion price tag.

Just $758 million of that is earmarked for purchasing the two Boeing 747s, the remaining $3.9 billion will go towards converting the two commercial jets into a unique flying White House configuration, including interior adjustments and special modifications.

The two aircrafts that will eventually become Air Force One Mark Two were actually purchased secondhand from a Russian airline that went bankrupt several years ago, in order to save money. Although the actual price paid remains a closely guarded secret, the two aircraft are believed to be sitting in the Mojave Desert while they await the commencement of modifications by the United States Air Force.

The last time Air Force One aircraft was replaced was during the tenure of former President Ronald Reagan. The updated aircraft were delivered during George H.W. Bush’s term in office at a cost of around $660 million USD, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Among the modifications we can expect are a new paint job, as requested by Mr Trump himself; a greater square footage, which although doesn’t allow for an increased passenger capacity, does offers more space for modifications like a comms bay and presidential office.

The aircraft aren’t scheduled to commence service as Air Force One until 2024, meaning the first passenger is likely to be whomever takes out the 2020 general election in November.
