Nature lovers, rug up. Applications are now open.
If Antarctica has topped your bucket list for a little too long now, Airbnb’s new recruitment drive is bound to pique your interests. This week, Airbnb and the Ocean Conservancy announced its Antarctic Sabbatical, for which the two institutions are seeking five passionate people to travel to this icy, remote continent in December on an important research mission.
No formal qualifications are required to apply, but a bold sense of adventure and love for the environment is mandatory.

During the month-long sabbatical, five volunteer scientists will spend time collecting snow samples, to study the the extent to which microplastics have impacted Antartica. On the continent, they’ll join Antarctic Scientist Kirstie Jones-Willians, who’ll help the intrepid five conduct their research. The overall goal? To bring awareness to humans’ impact on the climate in one of the least understood ecosystems on earth.
So, what’s in store? First, the volunteers will attend an immersion training in Punta Arenas, Chile, where they’ll undertake courses on glaciology, field sampling and lab work. Next, they’ll fly to Antarctica to begin their mission and begin collecting snow samples. While there, the five will visit the South Pole and explore the sights, including Drake Icefall, Charles Peak Winds coop and Elephant’s Head. Afterwards, they’ll return to Chile to continue studying their findings and work with the Ocean Conservancy to become ambassadors for protecting the oceans. Apply here.
