An airport game changer is being trialled

If successful, it’ll change travel as we know it.

We’re yet to find someone who enjoys waiting in airport queues, what with the early starts, hunger pains and restless feelings of wanderlust that just won’t quit. So imagine being able to skip all your airport queue woes using only your face. That’s right, step aside animoji because Qantas is about to take facial recognition to the next level.

The airline has started trialling facial recognition technology at Brisbane Airport after recognising the desire for passengers to move seamlessly throughout the airport, without having to produce a passport at every turn. This ‘biometric technology’ (using your body as a way of authenticating our identitiy) has the potential to revolutionise air travel if successful.

For the first time ever, passengers can upload their passport details and an image of their face to the Qantas app. This data is then matched to their face at each checkpoint of the airport process (check-in, bag drop, lounge access and boarding) using cameras placed throughout the terminal. In short, it could make your airport experience a lot less gruelling and have you en route to your destination far more seamlessly.

But if this all feels too impersonal, regardless of the outcome we’ve been assured that the technology won’t replace customer service staff entirely, so you can still enjoy a good yarn at the front desk if that’s your style.

The trial is currently limited to passengers who volunteer to take part, on flights from Brisbane to Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo Narita. And it’s also limited to passengers with Android devices, not iPhones.

The trial will run until December, when passenger feedback will determine its fate as a viable option.
