If you’re looking for luxury in Byron Bay, you don’t have to look too hard. In fact, Byron has nailed the quintessential laidback luxury you typically find at Australian resorts. But, there’s a new kid on the block and it’s bucking the trend.
Byron Bay’s first five-star hotel, Hotel Marvell, has just opened in the heart of Byron town on Marvell Street (just off Jonson Street) and it is five-star in every sense of the word. Think 24-hour front-desk, rooftop pool and bar, new restaurant offering in the form of Bonito and it is stunning to just look at. It leaves the traditional bohemian feel of Byron behind, and introduces a new class of luxury with a mix of warm-toned marble and tile finishes, American oak wood, tan leather and lush jungle-like greenery.

The 24-room hotel is the brainchild of Scott Didier and Scott Emery, both have long careers in the commercial and residential property business, but are dipping their toes into the hotel world for the first time. Even though it’s their first crack at opening a hotel, you can’t tell. Here, no detail is overlooked.

In the rooms you’ll find custom-made furniture by Yarra Valley Commercial and top-of-the-range Sealy beds, Baina pool towels, Leaf amenities adorning the bathroom, electric block-out blinds, a touch screen to operate the lights (which also work on a sensor) and temperature of the room, and a personal favourite, Bemboka & Eadie bed linen and towels.

And while this is not your ‘traditional’ Byron resort, Hotel Marvell embraces local businesses, providers and the community surrounding it. Byron ceramic artist Brooke Clunie has hand crafted the mugs in the rooms and the coffee pods provided for the Nespresso machine to fill said mugs are supplied by Zentveld’s Coffee, which grows and produces coffee in hills behind Byron Bay.
The same goes for the hotel restaurant, Bonito, on the ground floor. While it doesn’t call itself a seafood restaurant, it plates up a menu that focuses heavily on it thanks to the bounty of fresh seafood on its doorstep. Spanner crab comes from K’gari, lettuce from Bangalow, mushrooms from Byron, prawns from Ballina, the list goes on.

On the third floor you’ll find the jewel in the crown, Hotel Marvell’s rooftop bar and pool. Byron’s first ever rooftop bar is also stocked with gin from Cape Byron Distillery and other local producers, like Winding Road Distillery. The perfect spot for a sunset drink is only made better by the hibachi which is fired up from 5pm and grills prawn, octopus, king brown mushrooms and wagyu 9+. Paired with one of the signature cocktails, like the tropical flavoured Marvelltini or pandan-infused Siam Delight, can you name a better way to end a day? We’ll wait.
Room rates start from $600 per night for a Hotel Room and $780 for a Suite. For more information or to book, visit hotelmarvell.com.au
