Send us up there.
No longer will astronauts be forced to suck down pouches of pureed meats or crunch on dehydrated vegetables seasoned with liquid salt and pepper. As proof of man’s technological prowess, very soon we’ll be able to bake cookies in space and know that everything is right with the world.
Designed to make space stations more hospitable and homely (even if it is a bit chilly outside) space appliance company Zero G Kitchen has created a prototype space oven, which can hold and bake food on the International Space Station.
Ian Fichtenbaum from Zero G Kitchen said: “Baking in space is different because there is no gravity. On earth that air is churning around in the oven and that’s convection, but in space that’s not happening. Instead, we have to use induction through the air to warm it up.”
Jumping on the space-wagon, Hilton Hotels has partnered with Zero G Kitchen to ensure their DoubleTree choc chip cookies are the very first batch ever baked in space.
“Opening up the frontier of space means making it relatable to people’s everyday lives, and what could be more relatable than a freshly baked cookie?” Fichtenbaum said.
