We’re keen beans.

Tourists visiting Denmark’s capital that take part in environmentally-friendly activities such as litter picking or travelling on public transport could be rewarded with free food, cultural experiences and tours as part of a new program Copenhagen is currently trialling.

Visit Copenhagen, the capital city’s tourism authority, introduced the CopenPay trail scheme to encourage tourists to decrease their environmental footprint when visiting. The scheme will run from July 15 to August 11 and will transform green actions by tourists into currency for cultural activities and experiences.

More than 20 operators are participating in the program and will reward tourists that show the tickets for the public transport they took to get to the venue. For example, tourists who take plastic waste to the National Gallery of Denmark will gain access to a workshop where they can turn it into a piece of art.

Other actions that CopenPay will reward include cycling, participating in clean up efforts and volunteering at urban farms. Rewards include complimentary guided museum tours, free kayak rentals, free vegetarian lunch and freshly made coffee.

If the program proves successful at getting tourists to reduce their carbon footprint and also engage with the local community, CopenPay may continue to run year-round.
