Ready your sea legs, this cruise line is launching a floating gin distillery

Floating gin distillery to launch on cruise ship

We've officially hit peak gin.

Ready your sea legs, the world is about to get a floating gin distillery.

That’s right, just when you thought 2020 couldn’t throw any more curveballs at us, one of the world’s largest cruise lines has announced that it will begin creating its own gin aboard one of its cruise ships.

British cruise line P&O Cruises has unveiled a plan to create what may be the world’s first “gin distillery at sea”, saying that they’re planning to produce an ocean inspired gin in partnership with English spirit maker Salcombe Distilling Co.

The nautical Marabelle Gin (42% ABV) will be created on board the cruise line’s new ship Iona, inside the ship’s bar and library, which houses its very own gin still.

The gin will incorporate 18 botanicals including heather, citrus, green apple, blackberry, rose petals, mint and sea kelp, a combination that was inspired by the ship’s namesake, the island of Iona (a small island off the western coast of Scotland.)

“Marabelle means ‘star of the sea’, so this is a perfectly apt name for our unique recipe gin created on board Iona, a ship to make sea the star,” said P&O Cruises President Paul Ludlow.

After it’s initial launch from the distillery at sea, the P&O gin will be made at Salcombe Distilling Co’s distillery in Salcombe, before being served across the entire P&O Cruises fleet.
