Raise a glass!

Anyone with two ears and a heart are absolutely giddy over the announcement that Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway phenomenon Hamilton is returning to Australia in 2024.

If you want to see the man in action (or, at least a singing-dancing-rapping version of him) make sure you grab tickets your tickets ASAP. So far the show is slated to return to the Sydney Lyric Theatre on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 but we’re quietly confident other cities will be added to the run.

Here at delicious. we would be kidding ourselves if we said we hadn’t wondered exactly what our boy Alexander was dining out on in the late 1700’s.

Though record keeping of America’s Founding Fathers is a little patchy, there are a surprising number of sources that take note of what the rag-tag team of revolutionists delighted in over dinner.

Unsurprisingly given his penchant for gallivanting around Europe, Thomas Jefferson was a consummate host and was often meticulously involved in menu planning when entertaining.

During a dinner with Jefferson and James Madison, Hamilton is noted, “The beef was a masterpiece that Hamilton praised extravagantly” and that “Hamilton positively exalted” at the sight of “the delicious vanilla ice cream that still seemed like a miracle for it was enclosed in a warm pastry, like a cream puff.”

Martha Washington’s recipes – and consequently George Washington’s meals – were recorded in her Booke of Cookery and highlights modest meals and a particularly hefty chapter dedicated to fish recipes, of which George was extremely keen. The Washington’s family property at Mount Vernon was a self-sufficient estate so leaned heavily on game meats and seasonal vegetables prepared simply.

Outside of his fondness for ice cream, Hamilton was apparently fond of a drink even though he couldn’t hold his liquor. John Adams (that poor fellow who had to fill the shoes of George Washington as the second president of the United States) described him as an “insolent coxcomb who rarely dined in good company where there was good wine without getting silly and vaporing about his administration, like a young girl about her brilliants and trinkets.”

Ouch.
