Time to claim the gold medal in sitting.

Airbnb, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee have announced a five-day online olympics festival to make the start of what would have been the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

It’s ideal for filling the Olympic sized hole in your heart – and perfect for those of us who plan our entire lives around the Olympics. On top of which, it finally gives us all a reason to duck out of WFH zoom meetings early. (You’re welcome.)

If you’ve been feeling a little lost without a bizarre sporting obsession – like the steeplechase, tandem bicycle sprint or pigeon shooting – then this brand new five-day festival will have you passionately cheering from the sidelines like the legendary sports fan you are.

What is an online olympics?

The online olympic festival features more than 100 Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences, hosted by some of the world’s best athletes includes (among a whole host of others) sport and life related highlights such as:

  •  building resilience to overcome obstacles with 2016 Refugee Team Members and swimmer Yusra Mardini
  • working up a sweat with United States athlete Tatyana McFadden
  • cooking with athletic legend Colin Jackson
  • a scenic training ride with British triathlete Jonny Brownlee
  • pushing the boundaries with United States’ marathon runner Meb Keflezighi,
  • Run, breathe, connect with China’s world record sprinter Zhenye XIE, and
  • beachside Zumba with Brazil’s Tom Hintnaus and many many more.

Throughout the five days of programming, the line-up will showcase a variety of interactive Online Experiences that guests can book on Airbnb on July 22. Spectators can also watch select Online Experiences live or on replay on Airbnb and Olympic YouTube channels.

Experience Japan with the virtual olympics

On top of all that, the online olympics is a way to celebrate Tokyo 2020, allowing travellers from all around the world to experience Japan, via local host experiences.

Airbnb hosts in Tokyo and around Japan will host travel, cultural and traditional experiences to showcase their country from their living rooms.

A third-party partnership with the Shibuya City Tourism Association will allow local hosts to share a range of unique online activities like Become a Ramen Expert, Sake Secrets from Japan’s Oldest Brewery, Explore Kyoto and A Tour of Historic Shibuya among many others.

How can I watch the Olympics online?

If the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have left a hole in your life, we get it. 2021 is a long way away and the 2028 Summer Olympics are even further in the distance.

The festival of Olympian and Paralympian online experiences all kicks off on July 24th, which was when the Tokyo Olympic Games were scheduled to commence.

And if you miss the chance to participate in your favourite events, many of the athletes will also be hosting their Experiences – both online and in-person (in countries where it’s safe and permissible to do so) – with even more that will be added over the coming months.

When is the Tokyo olympics?

The Tokyo Olympics has been postponed due to COVID-19 and will commence on Friday July 23rd, 2021.
