You can now rent your very own private island in China for just over $500 a year.

China’s north-eastern province Liaoning is home to some 633 islands, more than five hundred of which are completely unoccupied.

A situation that the Chinese government has elected to rectify by offering the islands for rent, according to local news reports from CNN.

Some of the islands are being offered for rent as cheaply as 3,700 yuan per hectare per year–– or around $535 –– but others have been given prices as high as 25 million yuan (about $3.6 million.) The pricing system depends on several factors, including development potential, whether it has beaches and the presence of wildlife.

A few of the islands in the Liaoning province have already been tapped for tourism projects including parks. And one of the already-developed islands is also known for its manicured gardens and another for its beautiful sandy beaches.

But before you start mentally planning an Olympic sized swimming pool (or any other fancy developments) for your brand new Chinese island, remember, there will be a slew of other associated costs – like building, water, power and so on. Naturally, any development plans will also need to go via the government.

And yet, the allure of owning your own island is something that no amount of bureaucracy or financial logic can sully. We’ll be dreaming about it until someone can prove it’s completely impossible. (Or at least until travelling to someone else’s private island becomes an option again.)
