Watch yourself, Rome is set to ban messy eating

Here's why you'll need to mind your manners in the Eternal City.

If you’re a person who’s often seen sporting unidentified lunch stains down your otherwise crisp, white work shirts of an afternoon, you might want to reconsider eating outdoors in Rome.

Last year, we reported that another beloved Italian city, Florence, was slamming fines on people caught eating on the wrong parts of its streets – and now, tourists in Rome will need to mind their manners while visiting the Italian capital.

Those who demonstrate messy eating behaviors in Rome’s street could now cop a fine. And, it’s not just the messy eaters either – visitors who put their mouths on metal spouts on iconic fountains or drag suitcases down historic steps, jump in water fountains, fail to wear shirts, participate in padlocking bridges, busking or singing on public transport could be in trouble too.

These, and other new rules, have been announced as part of a national effort to manage tourism.
