The visa terminology is confusing. Ensure you have the right visa before departing.

Vietnam is fast becoming one of the hottest destinations for Australian travellers. Thanks to the launch of VietJet earlier this year, getting there has become easier and more adorable than ever.

Which means tourists are applying for visas thick and fast. Regular tourists need an e-visa, visa exemption certificate or approval letter for a visa-on-arrival to enter the country.

In most cases, tourists will obtain a standard e-visa, which you can apply for online at the official Vietnam immigration portal before travelling. This grants you entry into the country and is valid for 30 days. You must have at least six months validity on your passport. It will cost you around AU$35 and will take approximately three working days to be processed. The Vietnam Government also warns travellers not to use third parties to assist in visa applications as they may do it incorrectly or have nefarious intentions.

You can also apply for a regular tourist visa in person at the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra, by post, or online through the Vietnamese Embassy’s website. You’ll find the correct link on the Australian Government’s Smart Traveller website, although the newer, e-visa process is more streamlined and efficient.

Those less tech savvy tourists may think they can opt for a visa-on-arrival. But there’s a catch. While visa-on-arrival is an option you still need to have acquired an approval letter for the visa-on-arrival before you depart for your holiday. It is only recommended you do this if you’re departing from a country where there is no competent Vietnamese visa-granting authority. So, while many may be under the impression that they can apply for a visa when they land, it will not be granted without an approval letter.

Whatever your travel arrangements are, be sure to have the correct visa lined up so your holiday isn’t ruined before it even begins.
