Awkward chat with your driver optional.
What do you get when you combine an Uber with a submarine? Enter the scUber. No, this isn’t a poorly constructed Christmas cracker riddle – as of today, the scUber is a real-life thing.
Sometimes, when travelling, we encounter destinations where public transport isn’t an option, and parking can be a nightmare – rendering Uber your simplest choice for getting about. One such destination is the Great Barrier Reef. But things are about to change.
From 27 May to 18 June, riders can book a trip on the scUber, and witness the world’s largest living structure. Better yet, the launch is aimed at supporting the ongoing protection and conservation of the fragile coral reef system, through Uber’s partnership with Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. And yes, riders will simply select scUber on their Uber apps.

The partnership was announced today, with Tourism and Events Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer, Leanne Coddington, announcing, “We’re thrilled to partner with Uber to showcase the beauty of the reef through this innovative experience. In addition, we’re giving several adventure seeking travellers from around the globe, the chance to win a scUber experience for two as part of a global travel competition launched today.”
Unlike a regular Uber trip, however, this scUber comes with a higher price tag. The scUber experience will cost $3,000 for two riders. And, unlike a regular Uber trip, this one includes a scenic helicopter ride and an hour in the submarine.
Bookings are very much limited, and you can head to scUberQueensland.com for more information.
