Virgin Australia suspends international flights due to coronavirus travel restrictions

Coronavirus threatens to ground Virgin Australia

As coronavirus continues to spread worldwide, Virgin Australia have announced they will be temporarily suspending all international flights.

It seems every hour brings a new travel closure or cancellation announcement in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and this one is no different. Virgin Australia announced this morning that they would be temporarily suspending all international flights due to new coronavirus travel restrictions.

In a statement posted to their social media accounts and website, Virgin announced that they would be grounding all international flights and reducing their domestic flight schedule in an attempt to protect customers from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“We will be reducing our domestic capacity until 14 June due to new travel restrictions. We understand this will impact our guests and we’re committed to working with them on alternative options.

The company said they made the decision after reviewing updates to travel advisories from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which this morning raised their travel advice to the highest level: ‘do not travel overseas at this time.’

Accompanying the announcement was a list of Virgin Australia flights which have had confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) onboard.

The move follows similar announcements by Qantas and Jetstar yesterday.
