Ice, ice, baby.

If you’re into snow sports and live in Sydney you can say goodbye to waiting for winter to arrive to get your ski fix. It’s official, the state government has green lit the construction of the outrageous $400 million Winter Sports World development, which is predicted to open to the public in 2025.

Located in Penrith, this mammoth project will feature a 300m advanced open run for experienced skiers and snowboarders, learn to ski runs and a dedicated winter wonderland snow play area. There’ll also be a section where you try your hands (and feet) at ice climbing or crevasse outdoor rock climbing. There’s a little something for everyone.

For those who enjoy the apres ski side of skiing, more than actually skiing, Winter Sports World will also be home to a 4.5-star, 170-room hotel and cafes and restaurants that will boast views of the snow. Speaking of snow, did we mention that there will be actual snow here? Winter Sports World will be making it rain real life snow all year round.

But it’s not all fun and games. The winter wonderland will act as a competition venue for snow sports, such as alpine skiing, putting Sydney on the map when it comes to winter sport events.

For the snow bunnies who are also concerned about the energy this place will consume, the gargantuan venue has been designed to be net-zero carbon ready by reducing embodied carbon, eliminating fossil fuel use on site and minimising energy use, supplying energy with onsite renewable source, buying green power for remaining energy needs and offsetting remaining emissions. So you can enjoy your run of the slopes in the middle of summer with a clear conscience.
