Whatsapp is helping you take a break from your group chats

The app's new function could be a gamechanger for holidaymakers.

When holidays are spent hearing the ‘ding’ of rampant group chats all day long (or night, while on the other side of the world), it can feel like you never really left home. And if we can’t unwind while travelling, when can we?

Now, Whatsapp is reportedly releasing a new function to help its users take time out from the fast-paced flurry of messages while on holiday. It’ll be like a ‘do not disturb’ sign for your phone.

The so-called ‘vacation mode’ will present a new way to mute group chats so that you won’t return to your hotel’s WiFi to a backlog of notifications. This will apparently apply to notifications within the app and on your lock screen too.

But, you’re thinking, I can already mute my chats on Whatsapp! What’s the big deal? Currently, muting chats still leaves you with a collection of notifications to find when you reopen the app. However, the new ‘vacation mode’ will archive chats automatically, which means while you’re in the new mode you’ll remain undisturbed.
