For eight sun-filled days we lived like the rich and famous, darting across the French and Italian Rivieras on board superyacht Emerald Azzurra with Emerald Cruises. From idyllic Menton, a town known for its citrus, to retracing the exiled life of Napoleon on Elba Island, we ate, drank and lived our best James Bond-esque lives. The ship’s smaller size meant we could drop anchor in the waters near Portofino with its stunning coves and pastel-coloured villas. The most fun was taking Azzurra’s Seabobs for a spin in the crystalline waters of the Ligurian Sea. As every kilometre passed while I looked out my cabin window on the legendary Ghan, I saw the landscape change from vivid green to the deep rich colours of the Red Centre. It was like watching a nature documentary in real time. A highlight of this trip from Darwin to Alice Springs was discovering multiple perspectives on Nitmiluk Gorge. One team had an aerial view, the other experienced it close up on a leisurely cruise. Who went in a helicopter and who went by boat? And, more importantly, did we spot any crocs? From following in the footsteps of 14th-century popes in Avignon to those of Vincent van Gogh in Arles, sailing through the heart of France on board the Emerald Liberté on the Rhône with Emerald Cruises was magical. The Kimberley episode is the fourth in our adventure series, but it was the first we shot. It’s one of the most remote regions in Australia, and getting there required a small backpack, large amounts of water and a number of charter flights. In this episode one of our roving reporters gets well acquainted with the dirt of the outback while the other enjoys a bit more of a bird’s- eye view of the large landscape, gaining enough helicopter experience to almost fly the chopper themselves. The team also became all too familiar with mistaking logs for crocodiles, or maybe they were just secretly hoping to scare their competing reporter. It may be one of the most remote cities in the world, but flying into Perth always reminds me that it’s also Australia’s most underrated. The crew split into two and I headed 19km off the coast to Rottnest Island where the sand is white, and water clearer than the Maldives. Of course, you can’t go to Rotto without nailing a selfie with a quokka, the famous and friendly marsupials that you’ll find all over the island. So who captured the best shot?
