Twenty hours in the air, but you just don’t care.
Non-stop to London
The national carrier first unveiled its ambitious plans for ‘Project Sunrise’, an advanced supersonic long-haul flight that would enable non-stop flights from Australia to cities like New York and London, back in 2017.
Next generation A350 aircraft
Earlier this year, the airline ordered 12 next-generation Airbus A350-1000s, a fleet of ultra long-range aircraft that will cut up to four hours off of the travel time of today’s one-stop options. Now, Qantas has revealed preliminary concepts for the A350 cabins, including a first look at plans for the ultra-luxe First Class suites.
'Super first class'
Each of the First Class suites will feature a sliding door for privacy, a separate recliner lounge chair and bed, and a personal wardrobe built into the wall panel.
Clever storage
There’s also loads of clever storage options, including a spot for carry-on luggage under the ottoman, a fold-out storage compartment under the TV which will fit a tote or backpack, and a nifty hidden shoe drawer inside the ottoman. Hidden compartments
Beside the 32-inch screen, there’s a cleverly concealed cupboard with a mirror on the interior of the door, where you can stow personal items and amenities.
Personalised suite controls
The armrest lifts up to provide a storage space for your laptop, and there’s an in-built iPad that offers personalised suite controls for things like lighting, temperature and humidity.
Premium seating
More than 40 per cent of the cabin will be dedicated to premium seating, carrying 238 passengers across four classes (First, Business, Premium Economy, Economy). Related story: What to do if your flight is cancelled, according to an airline worker
Wellbeing zone
The A350 aircraft will also offer new Premium Economy and Economy seats pitched at 40 inches and 33 inches respectively, a next-generation Business suite and a dedicated Wellbeing Zone for movement, stretching and hydration.
From late 2025
The name ‘Project Sunrise’ was inspired by clandestine flights from Perth to Sri Lanka during World War II, which lasted long enough to see two sunrises. (Pictured: the hidden shoe drawer inside the ottoman.)
Carbon neutral
Project Sunrise flights will be carbon neutral, with all emissions offset. The first Project Sunrise flights are expected from late 2025. (Pictured: fold-out backpack storage compartment.) Related story: Why you shouldn’t book a hotel room above the 4th floor, and other surprising travel advice
