Entry fees to countries are becoming more commonplace post-pandemic due to the increase in travellers. Venice has introduced a tourism tax, that will have visitors forking out up to €10 for every day spent in the city. Those heading to Europe for summer won’t be allowed to enter without an ETIAS visa waiver. Thailand is following suit, as it experiences an influx of international arrivals. Here’s the rundown on everything you need to know about this new tax.
The entry fee will vary depending on the mode of transport used to enter the country. Those flying in by plane will be looking at a fee of 300 Thai Baht, which is approximately $13 (AUD). Those entering the country via land or sea will be charged 150 Thai Baht for entry, which is around $6 (AUD).
It will come into effect June 1, 2023.
International travellers who are stopping over in Thailand will be exempt from the fee. Only those that stay overnight have to pay the fee. Children under the age of two, diplomatic passport holders, Thai nationals and those with Thai work permits are also exempt from the fee.
For those travelling by air, the fee will be added to your international airfare. There is no collection method in place for tourists arriving by sea and land yet. This is expected to be announced shortly.
Majority of the money will go towards the development and preservation of tourist attractions. Some funds will be distributed to health and insurance coverage for travellers.
