A supercalifragilisticexpialidocious dining experience.

Mary Poppins the Musical has arrived in town and, to celebrate, the Sofitel has curated a high tea that’s as sweet, colourful and delightful as the show itself. Shobith Pal, director of food and beverage at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, is thrilled with his team’s inspired menu.

“I like to take artistic concepts which are iconic and connect them to what we’re offering to the public. Our partnerships with the arts scene in Melbourne gives us the perfect platform to play with concepts and come up with something completely wacky,” Pal says.

After the team of Sofitel chefs were sent to see the stage show, they were given time to brainstorm ideas and devise a creative menu that reflects the themes, imagery, characters and songs from the musical. Led by Executive Chef John Savage and pastry chef David Hann, this high tea proves that, as Mary Poppins says, “with the right amount of imagination, anything is possible”.

Just like our favourite nanny’s carpet bag, the treats on offer at the buffet-style high tea seem limitless. Miniature hats sit jauntily atop chocolate cherry profiteroles, looking just like the brimmed boater hat Mary Poppins wears. The tables are also laden with Poppin’ chocolate cups with tea cake biscotti and there are literal spoons “full of sugar”, balls of white chocolate sprinkled in a “snow” (but there’s a surprise inside so be wary, Mary has a sense of humour).

Chimney sweep Bert is a highlight of the stage show, so many of the sweets on the buffet are inspired by his character. There’s a smoked chocolate torte inspired by the Chim Chim Cher-ee song, plus edible chalk and boards on which guests can create their own masterpieces. Don’t worry, the dishes are also sprinkled with fruit to help the sugar go down.

Savoury bites include crumpets, sandwiches and English muffins, all nursery favourites that nannies in 19th century Britain would have served their young charges, but, of course, cooked with 2023 flair.

Coffee, tea and hot chocolate is included, and, “for the grown ups”, there’s always Champagne. Pal believes that inspiration comes when you’re immersed in the art. With this high tea, the Sofitel team offers diners the chance to experience the wonder and joy of the Banks children when their magical nanny appears.

Just like Mary Poppins herself, this high tea is ‘practically perfect in every way’. The Mary Poppins High Tea is part of American Express delicious. Month Out, a month-long celebration of the hospitality industry that includes special offers and deals every day in May.
