But is it worth the expense?
Forget fine dining, Australia’s focus on the food sector has fallen away from expensive dishes and instead towards expensive drinks. Take for example, the Millionaire’s Margarita from new addition Bar Patrón by Rockpool. The opulent take on the classic margarita is crafted from some of the world’s top spirits, and as a result will set you back $100.
The creation is rather flamboyant, but it’s exactly what you expect from a rather expensive tipple. A mixologist hand-presses lime and agave, shaking the duo together with a trio of super-premium and rare spirits. There’s Patrón Gran Burdeos Extra Añejo Tequila (which is aged in Premier Cru Bordeaux barrels), the 150-year old Grand Marnier Cuvée du Cent Cinquantenaire and a splash of Remy Martin Louis XIII, known as the ‘king of cognac’.
The garnish is equally ostentatious. After the drink is double strained over an ice sphere, it is adorned with gold leaf and sprinkled with native finger lime pearls, which offer little bursts of flavour with each sip. The elaborate presentation doesn’t stop there – the Millionaire’s Margarita is served table-side from a bespoke Patrón Tequila trolley, in bespoke glassware to boot. Each glass is a limited-edition make, a design by local artist Mark Eliott that is numbered and adorned with a tiny glass bee on the rim.
As its name suggests, the Millionaire’s Margarita is not for every budget but is certainly a rather entertaining take on the traditional.
