A major legal change has just swept the hospitality industry.
By most reports, the lockout laws have proven problematic for those with a hospitality business. But it looks as though there may be light at the end of the tunnel for those suffering, thanks to a recent announcement regarding the late-night legislation.
Minister for Racing Paul Toole has just announced that the government will allow small bars in the CBD and Kings Cross to serve spirits without mixers after midnight from October 1. Venues will additionally be able to sell cocktails not listed on the menu after the clock strikes twelve.
“Bartenders are rightly proud of their trade, and by removing this restriction, we are encouraging Sydney’s small bars to innovate and flourish,” Paul explained of the law change to Hospitality Magazine. “Small bars are adding to the diversity of Sydney’s nightlife, allowing patrons to relax and socialise in an intimate and sophisticated setting.”
The legislation change will allow for a booming cultural shift towards quality over quantity drinking, managing director of Diageo Australia David Smith told Hospitality Magazine. “We’ve been seeing cultural change in the way Australians consume alcohol for some time now. A rising premiumisation trend and consumers choosing to drink better rather than more has seen them embrace cocktail culture,” he says.
This is just the latest change for small bars as of late. A NSW-wide increase in patron limits from 60-100 people, as well as extended trading hours from midnight to 2 am, were also recently announced.
