Johnnie Walker’s last Private Collection release is a rare treat.
To quote platinum-haired ’80s rocker Billy Idol: “In the midnight hour she cried, more, more, more.”
And “more, more, more” is exactly what anyone – male or female – lucky enough to have a glass of 28 Year Old Midnight Blend, the latest and last release in the exclusive John Walker & Sons Private Collection, placed before them is likely to demand.
Unfortunately, with only 3888 individually numbered collectible decanters released globally – each filled with rare whiskies aged for a minimum of 28 years – indulgence is likely to come in limited amounts.
Still, should it do so, Johnnie Walker makes no bones about how this decadent fifth and final Private Collection bottling should be savoured: late at night after a good dinner – a true ‘midnight moment’ alive with layers of butterscotch, caramel and toffee, together with fruitiness and touch of spice.
28 Year Old Midnight Blend comes courtesy of the expert tastebuds of Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge and fellow blender Craig Wallace. Together, the pair sampled hundreds of Johnnie Walker’s finest single malt and grain whiskies from among the company’s reserves, eventually narrowing their hand-selected picks down to a few rare finds described as having the character necessary for a Scotch this wonderfully smooth and indulgent.
“Whiskies aged for 28 years are rare, and very special,” says Beveridge. “In our search to find the flavours and characteristics necessary for a rich, indulgent Scotch like Midnight Blend, we were very lucky to have access to some of the most mature reserves drawn from the four corners of Scotland. Each individual malt and grain used in the final whisky adds layers of flavour, leaving hints of fruit, sweet and spice and making it a wonderful final addition to the Private Collection.”
To enjoy this rare drop at its best, it’s suggested you serve it neat, in a balloon glass rolled in the hand to gently warm the whisky and release its distinctive aromas. A square or two of rich dark chocolate will add to this moment of after-dinner indulgence.
28 Year Old Midnight Blend (42.8% ABV) is available from Dan Murphy’s, RRP $1000.
