*Jumps to the top of bucket list* Words by Mariam Digges.
Moldova may not be on your travel radar just yet, but it’s about to be. The Eastern European country just north of the Balkans is home to Milestii Mici, a mazelike underground ‘city’ that stretches almost 55km.
Buried about 85m under the ground, the dark web of tunnels might not seem the most appealing of destinations. But what if we told you it’s home to the world’s largest wine cellar – would that cure your claustrophobia?
Founded in 1968, its limestone walls are lined with around 1.5 million bottles of “holy drink” (their words, not ours), which took them to the top of the Guinness Book of World Records in 2005 in the largest wine cellar category.
According to the GBWR, the first bottle was stored in Milestii Mici (named after the town it’s in) in 1968, and new vintages are added each year.
Milestii Mici’s shelves house whites and desserts but the underground cellar was first designed to age reds. When you book a tour of the cellar a guide is included (you just need to BYO car), and you can even try some of the plonk in one of their tasting halls. And those with an appreciation for the really good stuff can stop by the Golden Collection, where premium drops are stored; it’s like Willy Wonka for oenophiles.
