Pink tonic water is exactly what your G&T needs this summer

Pink-Gin-and-Tonics

Your gin and tonic will never be the same again, writes Lindy Alexander.

First it was pink chocolate, now it’s pink tonic water, but we’re not complaining.

Summer 2017-18 is going to be owned by pink drinks. We are totally devoted to our Rosé and Frosé (just check out the Instagram accounts of millennials) but we can’t help flirting with the pink-hues of Fever-Tree’s new Aromatic Tonic Water.

There’s something so summery and fresh about the blushing drink, which is ideal served in a highball glass clinking with fresh ice and a good glug of Four Pillars gin. Or if you want to go all out, put on your party shoes and whip up a spring punch by adding vodka, crème de cassis, lemon juice, ginger syrup and Fever-Tree Aromatic. Served in balloon glasses with blueberries, raspberries and strawberries it looks, well, pretty as punch.

The history of Aromatic dates back to 1814, and was inspired by a historic naval recipe. The extract of angostura bark was commonly used to ward against malaria caused by pesky mosquitos and was prescribed by naval surgeons as an alternative to the long known anti-fever prescription of cinchona bark (quinine).

By the middle of the 19th century, the use of pink tonic made from angostura extract was widespread in the Royal Navy.

Ever the globetrotters, Fever-Tree founders Charles Rolls and Tim Warrillow researched early references of tonics and have drawn on ingredients from across the world to make their drink.

Slightly bitter angostura bark from South America is balanced by the sweet, spicy flavours of various ingredients including vanilla from Madagascar, ginger from Cochin, pimento berries from Jamaica and cardamom from Guatemala. They are all combined to create a tonic that is subtly spicy and fresh, with lingering notes of citrus.

But let’s not forget that incredible colour, which is reminiscent of the perfect sunset.

Without the mosquitos of course.

Fever-Tree will be available from November 6.
20 venues will be promoting pink cocktails across the country from December. Venues include Sydney’s Zephyr Bar, Naked for Satan in Melbourne and Perth’s Sweetwater Rooftop.
