Coffee on tap is now a thing thanks to one of Sydney's favourite cafes

Single O

Single O has just welcomed a self-serve batch tap bar into its Surry premises.

Surry Hills’ Single O has just reaffirmed its status as one of the country’s coffee experts courtesy of its latest innovation. Namely, the roaster and cafe nestled into Reservoir Street has just unveiled the country’s first self-serve batch tap bar. The prototype has promised to cut your coffee queuing in half, brewing up to forty times faster than the traditional espresso machine – you’ll have your morning cuppa served to you in less than 15 seconds.

“Most people are yet to experience a single origin coffee. This batch brew bar is set to change that, bringing choice of origin – be it from Nicaragua, Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia – front and centre of the café, akin to a craft beer bar,” explains Single O Co-founder Emma Cohen.

It’s no surprise that the cafe is investing in its black coffee offering, considering orders of the coffee type have risen from 3% in 2003 to 23% today. The new creation is a part of a wider renovation of the space, which was designed by Luchetti Krelle, and accompanies an updated menu.

Of the latter expect a new Japanese inclination, inspired by Single O’s Tokyo roastery. “With our Japanese connection, I wanted to add in some flavours of Japan, but combine that with some amazing Australian native flavours – we have an awesome backyard of ingredients and we’re not really touching them,” says head chef Ben Hopkins. “What’s more sustainable than eating what’s in our backyard?” Dishes range from banana bread with Vegemite butterscotch sauce, to croc-ettes, featuring crocodile and a Japanese curry sauce.
