Is cricket teaching our kids to booze?

Beer
Yes, we are thirsty, Shane

And not in a "stay away from it, kids" way...

Earlier in the year, Shane Warne caused some good old-fashioned moral panic when he asked triumphant cricketers how thirsty they were (presumably, not for a cup of Milo). But it seems like the panic wasn’t exactly misplaced, with a new study showing that children receive 51 million exposures to alcohol ads. And that’s not even counting Warnie’s stupid questions.

The research, conducted at Monash University and published in Drug and Alcohol Review, shows that AFL led the way with the most alcohol ads, followed by cricket and then NRL. Almost half of kids’ exposure to boozy ads occurred during the day. While there aren’t meant to be any alcohol ads during the day (except between 12 and 3pm on school days, AKA Mum’s Time to Watch The Real Housewives), sports programs are a legal loophole.

The researchers noted that repeated early exposure to alcohol is associated with earlier initiation of drinking. So maybe keep your kids away from the Test match.
