The world’s best bar will shortly land in Australia

A historic London drinking den is taking a tour of the East Coast.

No matter your drink of choice, there are some drinking spots that stand head and shoulders above the rest. That’s the case for The American Bar at London’s The Savoy Hotel. Spawned from the boom of transatlantic travel in the late 19th and early 20th century, England’s capital became a hotspot for American-style cocktail haunts, including The Savoy.

The 125-year-old establishment, having already won awards (including Best International Bar Team, and Best Bar in Europe at the World’s 50 Best Bars 2016), is making a move down under. In partnership with coffee liqueur Mr Black, The Savoy’s American Bar will be coming to Sydney and Melbourne in October of this year. The bar will come accompanied by Martin Hudak, a world champion barista, bartender and senior bartender from the establishment.

The American Bar will be taking over Fitzroy’s The Black Pearl on October 15 and 16, as well as Eau De Vie in Darlinghurst on October 18 and 19. Both events are not ticketed, with doors open from 6 pm. On each night, guests can expect to sip on some of the American Bar’s famous cocktails, including the Hanky Panky, Green Park, and the Black Diamond, crafted by Martin himself.

“The American Bar is an institution, temple and peak of the hotel hospitality industry and I am thrilled to be able to introduce it to Sydney bartenders and cocktail lovers. I can’t wait to work alongside some of Australia’s best bartenders and share my passion for coffee and liquor with the guests,” says Martin of his involvement in the event.

Mr Black founder Tom Baker is equally excited about the pop-up. “The conversation to get Martin down to Australia started like many good conversations do, after Black Diamond and about six martinis at the American Bar. Martin and the team at the Savoy have been big supporters of our company and we share a common perspective on the future of caffeinated drinking in the bar,” he explains.
