Can you guess what the world’s most popular tea is?

We’ll give you a hint - it’s not English breakfast.

It’s hard to imagine a life without a cuppa in hand, particularly in Australia. Perhaps as the result of our English forebears, we’re a dedicated nation of tea drinkers, which has only expanded under multicultural influences (and the resulting bevvy of exotic teas reaching Australia’s shores).

According to Roy Morgan, least year 50% of Australians drank at least one cup in a given week. But as to what exactly Australians are turning to when they crave a brew, the leader of the pack would have to be French Earl Grey, says T2 Global Product Director Deanna Moylan.

And it’s not just Australians who have a passion for the twist on a traditional Earl Grey. “French Earl Grey is our top selling tea globally, and we actually sell enough French Earl Grey each year to make 7 million cups of tea! Safe to say it’s a firm T2 favourite,” says Moylan. Most likely because it offers something for everyone. “French Earl Grey is the perfect balance of floral and fruity notes, with a hint of citrus thanks to the bergamot – we totally get why it’s become the daily go-to brew for so many tea lovers.”

While Earl Grey retains its fans year-round, each nation has a distinct tea personality. “The Australian tea market takes its cue from the British tradition, with its roots in black tea. Having said that, we have seen a shift towards wellness teas from our Aussie tea lovers. Our European markets have a strong herbal tradition while American tea drinkers are pretty dedicated to their iced teas,” says Moylan.

Specific tea popularities also tend to surge depending on the season. “People definitely drink their tea in accordance with the seasons. When the new year rolls around we will see a trend in wellness and herbal brews such as Tummy Tea and Detox as well as the super on-trend Matcha,” Moylan explains. “Then, as the weather starts to get cooler, our customers start reaching for warming and more indulgent brews such as chai.” this is particularly true when it comes to the trendy turmeric latte. “Everyone’s going pretty crazy over turmeric lattes too, so much so that our Little Pot of Gold (a powdered rooibos and turmeric blend) sold out in 3 weeks!”
