Go home, TikTok. You’re drunk.
Hear that sound? It’s the collective groan of baristas everywhere as they react to the news of the latest coffee trend.
Not content with torturing our coffee creators with orders for a weak, extra-hot GMO-free soy chai latte, the caffeine fiends of the TikTok world are now making a brew-haha over a new cuppa – the scallion latte.
What fresh hell is this? As the name suggests, you simply top your coffee with chopped scallions – what we here in Oz call long green shallots. Why would you want to do this? The mind boggles, but apparently the shallots help to balance the bitter taste of the coffee while adding extra crunch. Because what everyone wants from their morning beverage is floating bits of extra crunch. Green floating bits of extra crunch.

The trend comes out of China, where people have been doing some seriously weird things with coffee, such as adding baby octopus or hundred-year-old eggs. When I put it like that, shallots don’t sound quite so alarming after all. But while I was willing to try adding salt to my cup of tea, and once even drank Pepsi and milk, this is one drink experiment that I will not be partaking in. You gotta draw a line somewhere.
If you want to try making one for yourself, coffee enthusiast and blogger @w_homecafe has posted a tutorial on Instagram. Best of luck. And may your floating green bits be extra crunchy.
