Is there anything George Clooney can’t do?
He’s won Oscars and been nominated for more. (Indeed, he’s the only person in history to have been nominated in six different categories.) His human rights work – particularly on the Darfur conflict – has been exemplary. And he’s been named the world’s sexiest man. Twice.
If all that weren’t enough, it turns out that that Hollywood superstar George Clooney makes a mean tequila, too.
Clooney and his longtime drinking buddies, hospitality mogul Rande Gerber and Discovery Land Company CEO Mike Meldman, will launch Casamigos Tequila to the Australian market next month. Australia joins the US, UK, Canada, Bahamas, Spain, Italy and Hong Kong as a global stockist.
Casamigos was born when Clooney and Gerber were building houses in Mexico.
“It was never meant to be a business,” Gerber told Entertainment Tonight in an interview. “We decided, if we’re building homes, we should have our own house tequila. It started out just us drinking it for years without anyone, you know, being able to buy a bottle.”
That changed after two years, Gerber said.
“One day we got a call from our distillery and they said to us, ‘We have a situation. In the past two years we’ve sent you 1000 bottles a year, so either you’re selling it or you’re drinking way too much. Either way, you need to get licensed and get legit with the situation.’”
The 100 per cent agave tequila – which is available in Blanco, Reposado and Añejo styles – has since become one of the world’s fastest-growing tequila brands.
Asked whether he could drink Clooney under the table, Gerber, who is married to supermodel Cindy Crawford, was hesitant to say.
“Well, George and I are both professionals, so we’re never under the table,” he said. “We’re usually up above or on the table.”
