The world’s first naturally black (and colour changing) gin has just landed in Australia

And it will lure you over to the dark side.

If the current shade of pink gin doesn’t really do it for you, a New Zealand distillery has drawn on some dark magic to create the world’s first naturally black gin, and now you can buy it in Australia.

Created by distillers, Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin, Scapegrace Black is made from a blend of unusual botanicals, including aronia berry, saffron, pineapple, butterfly pea flower and sweet potato, which work together to create a naturally black brew.

The secret to its ebony shade comes from the precise temperatures that the botanicals are distilled and the sequence with which they are added.

The gin is said to be full-bodied on the palate with a candied sweet potato and pineapple finish with a luxurious, velvety mouthfeel.

Like Ink Gin, Scapegrace Black doesn’t stay dark for long. The inclusion of pH-sensitive butterfly pea flower turns the tipple various shades of pink, blue and purple depending on the acidity levels of the mixers added.

When the gin was first released in New Zealand last year, it sold out on the first day of sale. You can now find Scapegrace Black in Australia at Booze Bud and selected independent bottle stores for $79.99 per 700ml bottle. For more details, head to scapegracegin.com.
