It’s hard to go wrong with a pinot grigio: easy to say, easy to drink and excellent value.

Pinot gris is the same grape variety; however, ‘gris’ is French, and ‘grigio’ is Italian, the difference being style. Gris is fuller in body, riper, spicier with a more viscous mouthfeel. Considered a prized grape in Alsace, France, it can be an absolute treat alongside meat, Asian spices and pâté.
Grigio is picked earlier, is higher in acid, lighter in body, more restrained in fruit, and has found great success in northern Italy. Lean towards delicate foods such as fresh salads, seafood and cold cuts. The grape is now common worldwide, and we make both styles in Australia, with our best-known drops coming out of the Mornington Peninsula.

Devil’s Corner Pinot Grigio, 2020, Tasmania, $19.99
This grigio has the slightest pale lemon hue, tinged with green; so light in colour you might mistake what is in your glass for water. The wine is young, and I would be drinking it soon to keep those crisp green apple and ripe pear notes alive. So refreshing you can almost taste the seaside and clean air of the Tasmanian East Coast. A grilled calamari salad would be a delightful sidekick.

Squealing Pig Spritzed Pinot Grigio, $6.99 for a 250ml can
I’ve always loved the idea of wine in a can. We’re not talking a $200 Bordeaux, we’re talking the Friyay, Sunday funday kind of wine that a small can makes it easy to transport. This refreshing little friend of the esky is superb on a warm beach day with some paper-wrapped grilled fish and chips.

Tar & Roses Pinot Grigio, 2019, Central Victoria, $19.95
A pretty drop that goes down a little too easily; good value wine that doesn’t need too much contemplation, just pop it in your mouth. With natural bright, zingy acidity from its cool Victorian climate, an aromatic nose with ripe pear, strawberries, a hint of guava, I’d whip up an olive oil and prawn pasta to sit alongside it.

Paringa Estate Pinot Gris, 2018, Mornington Peninsula, $22.75
Paringa Estate makes great wine. Acclaimed winemaker and founder Lindsay McCall has been at it since 1985. This gris is a crunchy, floral, aromatic wine with citrus fruit and apple on the palate. It’s light and approachable with enough complexity to keep you interested … and before you know it, the bottle is empty!

Josef Chromy Pinot Gris, 2018, Tasmania, $27.99
Josef Chromy OAM has been key to Tassie’s food and wine culture, and he clearly understands how perfect the region is for this grape variety. His 2018 vintage smells of poached pear, tasting of juicy white stone fruit and quince with notes of cinnamon, ginger and blossom. A generous, oily mouthfeel and rich flavours will make this little gem supreme served with pork sausage bangers and mash. Who could resist!

Anon Pinot Gris, 2018, Tasmania $24.99
Pale lemon to the eye, with a taste similar to its aroma. Spice, cinnamon, baked and poached apple with lemon peel. I would be opening this ASAP to enjoy all of its vibrancy but also because it’s damn tasty! Unravel a few cold cuts and invite a couple of neighbours around.

Fattori Pinot Grigio Valparadiso, 2014, Veneto, $31.99
Some say Veneto in Italy’s northeast is the spiritual home of pinot grigio. With 50% of the wine aged in stainless steel tanks and 50% aged in oak, this wine pours with an intense straw-yellow colour. It has a solid structure with ripe pear, pineapple, apple and apricot on the nose. I’d slide it down with a slice of asparagus and goat’s cheese quiche.

Ca’ Bolani Pinot Grigio, 2019, Aquileia, Italy, $18.99
From the northeast of Italy comes this crisp, sunny drop: a delicate and harmonious balance of minerals and apples, almonds and melon. A good-value and friendly picnic wine that will be a great companion with your barbecue chicken sandwich.

Domaine Jean-Marc Bernhard Pinot Gris, 2017, Alsace, $40.83
From the highly regarded pinot gris-growing region of Alsace, this family has been making wine for nine generations – over 200 years! Particular care has gone into crafting this wine, selectively handpicking organic fruit; the Domaine allows it to rest on lees for eight months, spending some time in large oak barrels and steel tanks. Expressive, complex and luscious while still remaining fresh and lifted.

Pizzini Pinot Grigio, 2020, King Valley, $20.00
The Pizzini family are known for their excellence in growing Italian grape varieties in the King Valley. Expect white florals and peach on the nose: fresh pear, citrus and crisp, playful acidity on the palate. Elegant and tasty, pair it up with a generous Italian antipasto platter.
Is pinot grigio dry?
Pinot grigio is dry. Any hint of sweetness you might pick up is actually the wine’s fruit characteristic, such as pear, melon or apple.
What is pinot grigio?
Pinot grigio is a greyish red-skinned Italian grape that makes white wine. To taste, it’s crisp and dry with citrus, stone fruit, melon, pear and has a lovely saline minerality. A versatile food wine that pairs well with everything from sushi to light pasta, you can also enjoy it as an aperitif.
Is pinot grigio sweet?
Pinot grigio is not sweet, but you might be wondering why you get sweet notes. That is the wine’s fruit characteristics shining brightly for you! You might pick up apple, pear, honeysuckle and citrus hitting your nose and palate. But there is no sugar in a pinot grigio.
