Take that, wine snobs.
A bottle of fizz that costs less than a fiver has been awarded a coveted ‘double gold’ at the 2021 Melbourne International Wine Competition, beating out wines five times the price.
This year, the annual wine comp drew over 1,000 submissions from seven countries, with entries judged by a panel of sommeliers and industry experts.
Topping the pops was a bottle of Aldi’s South Point Estate Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir ($4.99) from South Eastern Australia. The award-winning sparkler is made from a classic blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, and is said to taste fresh and full of flavour with notes of citrus and stonefruits.
It wasn’t the only Aldi wine to be awarded a ‘double gold’. The Bordeaux Les Maurins Sauvignon Blanc ($6.99) and Villa Elsa Pinot Grigio ($6.99), also received the same accolade.
“We are thrilled that our award-winning wines have been recognised yet again among the highest quality drops available in Australia,” Aldi Australia wine buying director Jason Bowyer said.
“Whether you prefer a refreshing bubbly, white or rose, or a deep, rich red, the one thing we can all agree on is that satisfying feeling of knowing you’re saving and getting awesome value the same time”.
