*Books next flight to Rome*
There isn’t much that Italy hasn’t given to the world – pasta, pizza, the ice cream cone (yes!) – but none have come close to what a small town east of Rome has bestowed, a 24/7 wine fountain that’s completely free.
Filled with red Montepulciano wine grapes, the fountain in Ortona, Abruzzo, was set up by a local winemaker and a non-profit organisation that supports the Cammino di San Tommaso – a 225km pilgrimage from Rome to Ortona where the remains of St Thomas, one of Jesus’ apostles, is said to lay.

Speaking to The Local, the vineyard has warned though that the fountain isn’t for “drunkards” and shouldn’t be seen as a “publicity stunt.”
Vineyards have been making wine in the region since the sixth century BC.
We’ve got our bags packed – we’ll see you there!
