The furry Japanese mascot is all grown up.
It’s no secret that Hello Kitty’s fan-base stretches well beyond children. In Tokyo, locals can sit down to a Hello Kitty-themed breakfast at a Hello Kitty-inspired hotel, while Sydney, Singapore and California all boast their own diners dedicated to the Japanese mascot.
As such, we’re not completely shocked that Sanrio, the creator of the cutesy character, has teamed with Italy’s Torti Winery on a Hello Kitty wine line.
This isn’t the first time our favourite animated friends have inspired booze brands; Homer Simpson’s brew of choice, Duff beer, began selling in Chile before it was exported out internationally.
The LA Times reports that Patrizia Torti, whose family owns the winery, was approached by Sanrio as early as 2007 about the idea. The Tortis have been preserving some of their harvest for the Hello Kitty label ever since.
If you close your eyes and try to picture yourself in Hello Kitty’s flower-rimmed, bow-wearing world, the wine accompanying said fantasy is likely pink, syrupy and easy-drinking.
The Tortis had the same idea, which is why the Kitty wine collection manifests mainly as sparkling or rose: handpicked pinot noir and chardonnay grapes have been favoured in a sparkling Hello Kitty rosé, while a sparkling white is made from Pinot Noir grapes.
Taste aside, with names like Charmy, Cupido and Lady, fans will likely be buying up for the packaging alone.
For the moment, the wine is available by the glass at Antonello Ristorante in Santa Ana, California, but given the contagion of Kitty-fever, it’s probably only a matter of time before we can get our paws on it.
