The Cellarmasters inaugural Wine Lovers Report (or, In Vino Stats Veritas, if you want to make it sound a little more profound) looked at a bunch of sales data to determine the type of wines each star sign prefers.“By analysing our customer insights and comparing it to orders from the last 12 months, we were able to analyse how wine preferences differ between star signs,” says Christine Rickets, Cellar Director at Cellarmasters.

Aries are full of spontaneity; they are known to be impulsive, direct and courageous, as well as daring and energetic. So it may not come as a surprise that they drink more Champagne than any other star sign – every day is a celebration if you’re an aries! When it comes to red wine, they prefer a fruity cabernet from the Barossa Valley, while white wine drinking Aries opt for a glass of sauvignon blanc from New Zealand’s Marlborough.

Taurus is known to be reliable, generous and practical, although they can also be self-indulgent, lazy and stubborn. Taurus is an earth sign, so it makes sense that they prefer a big, bold shiraz wine from the Barossa Valley. They also drink more merlot wine than any other star sign. The white wine drinking Taurus tends to prefer sipping on a Margaret River chardonnay, or a semillon sauvignon Blanc from the Hunter Valley.

A gemini is known to be quick-witted and expressive with two different personalities. One side of a Gemini is fun and sociable and the other side is suddenly serious and restless. Perhaps it the restless side that make Gemini favour imported red wines more than any other star sign, and they have a particularly soft spot for sangiovese from Italy. White wine-loving Geminis will grab a glass of bold South Australian chardonnay or a crisp Marlborough sauvignon blanc.

Cancer is one of the more emotional signs, and Cancerians are known for being very sensitive and sympathetic towards other people. Perhaps it is that sensitivity that makes the sign love pinot noir, a complex, light bodied red wine. When it comes to white wine, they are one of the biggest riesling drinkers, and they are huge fans of a crisp, dry and complex riesling from South Australia’s Eden Valley.

A Leo is born for the spotlight. They are action-orientated and have a need to be loved and admired by all. They like their wines to be the same – bold and unique, particularly when it comes to red. A Leo loves to drink fruity McLaren Vale merlots – the region is known for producing Australia’s best. When it comes to white wine, they prefer crisp yet fruity. Leo drink more riesling than any other star sign, they also enjoy sauvignon blanc and pinot gris from the Marlborough region.

Unlike other star signs, Virgos dislike being the centre of attention. They are also kind, hardworking and are known to think analytically. Red wine loving Virgos prefer an elegant, medium bodied Clare Valley shiraz, while white drinkers prefer a subtle pinot gris from South Australia. Of all the star signs, Virgos drink the most sparkling shiraz, a great Aussie sparkling red wine to enjoy with food. In other words, a practical bottle of bubbles, which is quite fitting to Virgo’s practical nature.

Libra are known for looking out for everyone’s needs above their own, and are known to be kind, gentle, peaceful and full of love. It’s this loving nature that makes them love blends! Red drinking Libra love a cab sav, and they drink more of the varietal than any other star sign. When it comes to white wine, Librans enjoy a semillon sauvignon blanc from South Australia, or a sparkling Australian wine. Libra also like rosé, and are one of the biggest rosé fans of the zodiac. Their top pink choice is a dry rosé from France.

Sagittarians are free spirits, and full of optimism and courage. They are also known to be impatient and reckless. After Cancer, they are the star sign that enjoys pinot noir the most – and their favourite one comes from Marlborough. When it comes to white wine, they enjoy a South Australian pinot gris or chardonnay.

Aquarians are open minded, over thinkers, unpredictable and independent – they tend to be visionaries and leaders, and like to do things their own way. When it comes to their wine choice, Aquarians are big red wine drinkers, and more than half of Aquarians prefer shiraz to any other wine varietal – which might come down to their need to analyse things and use their mind. Trying the endless range of shiraz wines, the variety that Australia is famous for producing, keeps them on their toes. When it comes to white, the sign enjoys a glass of sauvignon blanc from Marlborough or Adelaide Hills.

Arguably the most determined sign, Capricorns are ambitious, practical and always willing to help. They are secure in their own place, and are known to be sensible and full of wisdom. Perhaps it is their self-confidence that makes them stand out in the stats – they are the biggest white wine drinkers of the zodiac, and their favourite white tipple is chardonnay – in fact, they drink more of the varietal than any other star sign. In other words, they know what they like. If they are drinking red wine, a South Australian shiraz is their top choice, followed by a fruity merlot from the same region. This star sign will happily sip on a fruity rosé from McLaren Vale as well.

Pisces are generous, compassionate caring and faithful. They are more intuitive than other zodiacs, and often have an artistic talent. Pisces are big white wine drinkers, and are one of the top drinkers of sauvignon blanc from New Zealand. They also have a soft spot for a semillon sauvignon blanc from Margaret River. When it comes to red wine, they enjoy a cab sav from Coonawarra, or a cabernet blend from the Limestone Coast.

Scorpios are known for being intense. They are strong willed, driven, ambitious and dedicated. When it comes to red wine, Scorpios prefer a big, bold shiraz from the Barossa Valley. They are also big fans of rosé, and enjoy the fruity rosé from South Australia rather than the crisp, French rosé. As far as white wine is concerned, they like to enjoy a chilled glass of big flavoured Margaret River chardonnay. Scorpios are big fan of bubbles – they drink more sparkling wine than any other star sign, and prefer their bubbles from South Australia or Tasmania.
